As the weather cools down and the leaves start to fall, it is important to adjust our routines to stay healthy during the autumn months. In Chinese medicine, autumn is a time to focus on the lungs and the large intestine. These pathways and organs also govern how we deal with responsibility and the health of our immune system. We are back to school which increases our responsibilities, the air is dryer, and ragweed is out causing seasonal allergies and stress on the lungs and large intestine. One simple way to support these organs is by staying hydrated and eating seasonal foods like apples, pears, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and squash which nourish the body and help maintain moisture in the lungs. Warm teas made with ginger, chamomile, lemon balm, nettles and local honey can help with calming the intestines and boosting the immune system.
Acupuncture is another tool that can help keep you balanced during the fall. This ancient practice involves inserting tiny needles into specific points on the body to promote the flow of energy, or “Qi.” In the fall, acupuncture can be particularly effective in strengthening the immune system, relieving stress and addressing any respiratory or intestinal issues that might arise as the weather changes. Regular treatments can help prevent colds and flus by boosting your body’s natural defenses.
In addition to diet and acupuncture, it is important to get plenty of rest and keep your body warm as the temperatures drop. Covering your neck from the wind, wearing layers, getting enough sleep and incorporating gentle exercises like tai chi and yoga into your routine can help maintain your energy levels and keep your immune system strong. By tuning into the rhythms of the season and taking care of our body, you can enjoy a healthy and vibrant fall.
